If You Travel Outside the U.S.
Our medical plan options provide in-network level for emergency or urgent care services received outside the U.S. If you need urgent medical attention while traveling outside the U.S., you must pay for the services and submit a claim for reimbursement.
You can access assistance with medical care outside the U.S. through Global Core. If you need to locate a doctor or hospital, or need medical assistance services, you can call Global Core Service Center at 1-800-810-2583 or collect at 1-804-673-1177. 24 hours a day, seven days a week. An assistance coordinator, in conjunction with a medical professional, will arrange a physician appointment or hospitalization, if necessary. For more information about Global Core, visit www.bcbsglobalcore.com. For details about locating a doctor or hospital when traveling outside the U.S., click here.
Prescription Drugs
Our medical options include retail and mail order prescription drug benefits, provided through CVS/caremark. Prescription drug benefits cover three main categories of drugs.
Generic drugs have the same active ingredients as brand-name drugs but often cost considerably less. Typically, a prescription will be filled with a generic drug if one is available, even if a brand name is written on the prescription — unless your doctor specifically instructs otherwise.
Preferred brand drugs are brand-name drugs that have been carefully selected by CVS/caremark on the basis of their value as quality medications while helping to lower the cost of prescription drug benefits.
Non-preferred brand drugs are brand-name drugs that aren’t on the CVS/caremark preferred drug list. They usually cost more than preferred drugs.
